Afternoon Activities

ICE BREAKERS TO ENSURE EVERYONE IS HAPPY!!!

When our students arrive we employ youth workers to come and hold team building sessions and ice breakers. This ensures visitors from varying nations bond from the beginning. This relaxes our visitors, takes away any worries they may have and helps them settle happily into their new environment.

Afternoon activities should be quality, fun and cultural. The following activities are enjoyed by our visitors:

  • Irish Music
  • Irish Arts & Crafts
  • Irish Dancing
  • Tag Rugby
  • Self Defence

We work with professional tutors. All instructions are through English. This results in learning English while having fun with your new friends!

Irish Dancing

Dargan School of Irish Dancing owner Adeline Dargan has taught our visiting students to perform Irish dancing to beginner level for well over ten years now. This is a genuinely unique experience with Adeline giving personal attention to students in a thoroughly enjoyable atmosphere.

Irish Song

‘Hi, I’m Paul Horahan and I am the Irish Music teacher with CIELS. I’ve been playing music for over 15 years, I run my own private music school and I currently play with the excellent wedding band Helter Skelter. In our classes we cover a wide range of Irish music, learning to sing and learning some of the history of the songs, beginning with some traditional Irish ballads dating from as far back as 250 years ago right up to the most popular modern Irish music from current acts. All students enjoy the singalongs we have in class and the songs we learn stay with them long past their stay in Carlow’.

Self Defence

‘Hi, my name is Rick Whelan. I'm a 2nd Degree Black Belt in Wado-Ryu Karate. I've been studying martial arts for over 20 years. I've fought at World & European level for over 10 years. I'm also a coach for the Irish National Squad. I've been teaching karate for 7 years now, for students ranging from 4 years old to 60 years old. I also teach street self-defence classes for schools & community groups. I've been working with CIELS for the past five years. Don’t worry, I understand that the aim with the school is to provide a fun activity for the students. Bearing this in mind we aim to teach in a safe, controlled environment while focusing on participation and fun.’

Irish Arts & Crafts

‘Hello, my name is Adam Bohanna. As an art teacher I have always found the rich historical landscape of Carlow an interesting source of inspiration. From the ancient Dolmens, High Crosses and Myths and Legends relating back to the Bronze age they offer a focus for the artistic imagination to express itself. Whether the student relates to the geometric abstraction of the stone-age or perhaps current contemporary Art as seen in,’ Visual’, Carlow’s Centre for Contemporary Art they will be encouraged to form a relationship between visual culture of the environment and their artistic ability.’

I really enjoyed my time in Ireland! The Blended Programme gave me good experiences, meeting new people, learning a new culture and language. I learned a lot at the Irish Wheelchair Association Carlow where I did my internship. I also learned a lot studying the Human Growth and Development and Work placement module. The time flew because we were having so much fun. I can't believe it's already over but I will never forget it. Blended Programme thanks for everything!

The Blended Programme was great! It was an amazing combination of the internship and college. I've learned so much at school about Human Growth and Development. My internship was great and all the Irish people are amazing! Sean, Danny and Claire helped us when we needed them, they were fantastic. Thanks for everything, this is an experience I will always remember.

My experience with the Erasmus+ Blended Programme is very positive. It gave me an opportunity to learn about Ireland, learn the English language but also I learned to be more independent. Supervisors from the Blended Programme, teachers from school and my colleagues from Hillview Nursing home helped me with everything. Blended Programme thanks for this amazing experience I will never forget it.
